Choosing tyres - what to know before you buy
Tyres are one of the most important safety elements of a car, as they provide the contact between the vehicle and the road surface. Correctly chosen tyres improve braking performance, reduce fuel consumption and ensure a comfortable ride. Rīgas Riepas offers a wide range of tyres from globally recognised manufacturers, so that every driver can find the solution best suited to their needs.
How to choose the right tyre size
The tyre size is stated on the sidewall of every tyre and in the vehicle registration certificate. A marking such as 205/55 R16 91H means: 205 - tyre width in millimetres, 55 - profile height as a percentage of the width, R - radial construction, 16 - rim diameter in inches, 91 - load index, H - speed rating. It is important to follow the sizes recommended by the manufacturer, as an unsuitable size can affect driving safety and your car's warranty.
The importance of seasonal tyres in Latvia
Latvia's climate, with its pronounced changes of season, calls for at least two sets of tyres - summer and winter. Under Latvian road traffic regulations, winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, but it is advisable to fit them as early as November, when the air temperature regularly drops below +7°C. Summer tyres, in turn, provide better grip in warm weather and reduce fuel consumption.
EU tyre label
Since 2021, all tyres sold in the European Union must carry the EU label, which indicates three key parameters: fuel efficiency (A-E), wet grip (A-E) and external rolling noise (dB). Snow grip and ice grip pictograms may also be shown. This label helps you compare tyres and choose the most economical and safest option.
Price and quality
The tyre market offers three main segments: premium brands (Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone), mid-range brands (Firestone, Hankook, Falken) and budget brands. Premium tyres usually offer shorter braking distances, a longer service life and lower fuel consumption, while mid-range tyres provide a good balance of quality and price. When choosing tyres, consider the total running costs, not just the purchase price.
Tyre storage and care
Proper storage extends the life of your tyres. Tyres should be stored in a cool, dry and dark room, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Tyres on rims are best stored lying flat or hung up, while tyres without rims should be stored upright. Check your tyre pressure regularly - incorrect pressure accelerates wear and increases fuel consumption.
Additional technologies
Modern tyres offer a range of additional technologies. RunFlat tyres let you keep driving even after a puncture, at reduced speed, for up to 80 km. Extra Load (XL) tyres are designed for heavier loads and are often used on SUVs and commercial vehicles. Studded winter tyres provide extra grip on ice, but they may only be used from 1 October to 30 April.
